The Family of Ferdinand Bals
(Christened as Peter Ferdinand Bals)

The Family of Henrietta (Kohler) and Ferdinand Bals

Grave marker of Ferdinand (1856-1937) & Henrietta (1863-1955) and their infant children Anna, Mary, Emma & Frank in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Crete, Nebraska.

Born:            October 3, 1856 at Lusebrink Farm, Schmerlecke, Westphalia, Germany.
                       Godparents:    Ferdinand Ahnhorst of Boxel
                                                   Friederika (Sultrop) Fenne of Merklinghausen
                                                   Heinrich Bals
Married:      About 1885 In Germany to Henrietta Köhler of Schmerlecke.  Henrietta died in 1955 at Norfolk,
Madison Co., Nebraska.  (Marriage date based on 1900 Saline Co. Nebraska census data.  The
genealogy of Lusebrink Farm tells that he married a H. Schiekhoff of Herringhausen.  Visits to
Lusebrink Farm and the Köhler family in Schmerlecke verified that this information was
incorrect.  Henarietta Köhler worked as a house servant on Lusebrink Farm prior to their
                       marriage.
)
Died:            1937 (Place of death was likely Pierce Co., Nebraska.)

Children:
    Bertha -
        born:    March 1885 in Germany.
        died:    ?
Note:    The 1900 Census of Saline County, Nebraska tells that Ferdinand immigrated to the United
States in 1885, the same year they were married, and Henrietta immigrated in 1887.  It also
indicates an unusual situation that Bertha, born in March 1885 in Germany, immigrated in
1886.  If this information is correct, she would have been approximately one year old and would
have come to the United States one year before her mother.  A column of the census further notes
that they declared in 1900 that Ferdinand had been in the U.S. for 15 years, his wife Henrietta
for 13 years, and the daughter Bertha for 14 years.  This repetition of information would
seem to minimize error in the census information.  To date, there is no documentation as to
who would have brought Bertha to the United States.  Bertha does not appear with the family
on the 1910 census and the author of this website has no further information on her.
