Oct. 23
Funeral services are being held today (Oct.26) for Henry F. Bals, who died
October 23, 1972, after a lingering illness. Fr. Anthony Kotz will officiate and
burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetary.
Henry F. Bals was born in Crete on December 20, 1893, the son of Henry and
Elizabeth (Rickert) Bals.
On November 29, 1917, he and Anna R. Smejkal were married in Sacred Heart
Church by Rev. A. Mosler. Mr. Bals was a lifelong member of that church; a
member of the St. Joseph’s Society; member of the church board and the Sacred
Heart Cemetary board. He farmed in rural Crete until 1959 when he moved into
town. He drove a star route for several years and worked as a custodial
employee at Doane College until 1970.
Survivors include his wife Anna; son, Leonard, John, Henry J., all of Crete and
Eugene of Lincoln; brothers, Theodore and Herbert,
Loup City and Carl, Montrose,
Colo.; sisters, Mrs. Frank (Ella) Schwader, Los Angeles; Mrs. Herman (Augusta)
Witte, Chadron;
Mrs. Fred (Tillie) Buntemeyer and Mrs. Elmer (Hattie)
Buntemeyer , Clinton, Iowa and Mrs. Carl (Thelma) Miller, Hollywood, California;
27 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Alfred, and two sons, Valarian and Jerome.

Bals, 86, Crete
Passed away on September 9, 2007 at Bryan LGH East Hospital
in Lincoln, Nebraska.
He was born on December 23, 1920 in Crete to Henry F. and
Anna (Smejkal) Bals. Leonard was a graduate of Crete High School and attended
Doane College in Crete. On September 1, 1945,
Leonard married Mary Alice Nelson at the St. Paul
Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, Fla. Crete became the couples home.
Leonard served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946
and worked for U.S. Postal Service for 40 years.
He was a lifetime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church
and also belonged to the St. Joseph Society, the American Legion, and the
College Heights Country Club. He was a past
commander of the American Legion Post#147.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jerome
and Valerian; brothers-in-law Frank Spring and John Nelson.
He is survived by his wife,
Mary Alice; children and spouses, Kathy and Dick Barber of Crete, Marge and
Bernie Grall of Vero Beach, Fla., Tom and Deb Bals of Topeka, Kan., Bob and Deb

Visitation will begin Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.,
at Sacred Heart Church in Crete. The funeral will be held Thursday, September 13th
at 2;00 p.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Crete. Internment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery,
Father Julius Tvrdy will officiate the mass and music will be provided by the
Guitar Choir. Pallbearers are Darrell, Jim, Eric, Ryan, and
Andrew Barber, Matt and Pat Grall, Chris, Adam, and
Aaron Bals, Michael Shea, and Sean Bals. Memorials may be given to St. James
School, Crete.
