Map of Makov-Drazice Area
The village of Drazice, my grandmother's home (Anna (Novotony) Smejkal) is indicated by the "A" marker. Makov, the home village of Jan Smejkal is just to the northwest, approximately 5 km. Other villages appearing in family documents are the small farming villages of Hurka just to the north of Makov, Drahnetice to the west, and Vlasenice to the east of Makov. All of these would have been within walking distance of each other in the late 1800's when small rural roads and paths connected village to village. The collective farm movement following WWII joined most of the individual family farm plots, and removed the ancient connecting village roads and the raised turn-rows subdividing fields of the individual village families. Based on the images from Google Earth, Drazice seems to be the larger village, just to the west of Tabor, approximately 500 population with many of the original farm complexes dating from at least the 1800's. . Makov also bears the same pattern, but appears to have a modern industrial complex on the northern edge of the village. The nearby village of Hurka, Drahnetice, and Vlasenice seem to have much the same character of a farming village that existed in the 1800's. Despite the Socialist Collective Movement following WWII, images on Google Earth appear to provide some ghost images of the original division of land by village families. See the History of Region page for more detailed information on the area. |
